Aya, from the nomadic Berber tribe, was escaping to Europe when her migrant ship was destroyed in the same storm. As hope of rescue begins to fade, they find strength in these tales of magic, brave heroes, wily thieves, greedy sultans, and courageous girls.

Bill is a teenager completing a Youth Sail Challenge when the yacht is caught in a storm off the coast of Morocco. After many days surviving in a tiny rowing boat, he rescues Aya, a girl clinging for her life to a barrel in the ocean. They drift on through endless days and long, dark nights; hungry, thirsty, sunburnt and scared. Aya tells Bill stories from her nomadic tribe to pass the time and to give them hope.

Vick's writing follows the ebb and flow of the sea and he places the reader in the scene effectively, making them feel as if they too are out at sea. The structure of the sentences and Bill's narrative mimics the rise and fall of the stormy waves and then captures the hopelessness of staring out across an endless horizon. The two characters are very well crafted and the dynamics between them is beautifully developed - slowly and gradually showing how they become closer and the effect their experience has on them and their relationship.

Aya is mysterious, alluring and intriguing. She seems magical and her storytelling shows how important the hope of rescue is - almost as lifesaving as food and drink. It's a perfect mix of adventure, drama, tension and coming of age. Perfect for year olds, this is a great summer holiday read for anyone who dreams of desert islands, wonders how they would survive at sea or loves that blend between reality and the magical. This is a treat - enjoy!

This is one of those novels that I just cannot find the right words to describe how stunning and beautiful it is. From the cover, the story and every single word, this book is simply stunning. The storytelling was so compelling and breathtaking that I just fell straight into it and never wanted to leave. The setting of the story is at sea, with nothing else around. Pretty difficult to make interesting? Not for Chris Vick! Every smell, sight and sound jumped from the pages which were filled with vivid details of the wonder and danger of the open sea.

The relationship between Bill and Aya is told tenderly and with love. Both have faced difficult times and the way they care for each other brought me to tears so many times.

Their vulnerability and immaturity shone through at times giving the reader reminders that these characters are just children. I adored the way they learned to communicate through the language barriers too. This novel is just utterly stunning for adults and young adults alike and I really cannot recommend it enough. I was sent a copy of this novel for free by the publisher. I was completely sucked into this novel on that cover alone. And the beautiful setting captured there really is a great representation of the novel itself.

We follow 15 year old Bill as his sailing trip turns into a disaster. Later he finds Aya in the same position and together they fight to survive, staving off the heat, hunger and dehydration. This is a beautiful tale of companionship and survival, with two people from very different backgrounds coming together in extraordinary circumstances. I found the characters realistic, and was totally transported into their story.

But it equally heartwarming and I adored reading it. Snippets of tales of Shahrazad were scatter throughout. I admit I was skeptical about this at first, but they work wonderfully weaved through the trials of our two young protagonists. I would thoroughly recommend to anyone young or old! When a storm capsizes his yacht off the coast of the Canary Islands, 15 year old Bill finds himself alone and lost at sea in a small rowing boat with scant food supplies.

After three difficult days at sea he spies something in the distance, a pinprick which grows into a floating oil barrel. And hanging on for dear life is a girl, Aya, who we later find out is a French speaking Berber refugee.

When the realities of their precarious situation begin to bite the story takes another turn, and we find out there is more to Aya than meets the eye. The story unfolds in a really good way, as the two protagonists work together to survive without really knowing each other. Trapped together in this tiny space they connect in an instinctive way, not defined by the normal divisions of language.

Bill is curious, but not pushy, very respectful of her cultural boundaries. He tries to concentrate on survival. Bill teaches her a bit about science, she teaches him about story telling. Chris Vick uses her to weave stories about Sharzad the story teller from nights into the narrative which gives us and Bill clues to her past. Bill considers his place in the universe, the sea, the stars, his past life and the story takes on a kind of mythic quality. I was really carried along, the language feels simple and direct, and sometimes poetic, working on two levels, both adult and young.

This is beautiful story of survival, love, friendship and bonding, which reflects on how we have more in common as humans than differences. A great read!

The wide-ranging scope of the Handbook of Life-Course Criminology covers genetics and environment, child offenders and late bloomers, the impact of school and peers, lifelong and time-limited criminal careers, and qualitative and quantitative methodologies. This unique Handbook is further set apart by its dual coverage of the leading edge of current research and innovative directions for future work in the field. Pathways to crime have been a central concept of criminology from its inception. Accordingly, a lifespan approach to the field has replaced earlier biological and sociological perspectives with a more nuanced understanding of offender behavior and a wider lens of study. The contributions to this Handbook break down issues of criminal and antisocial behavior from early childhood to late adulthood, examining developmentally targeted prevention and intervention strategies and reviewing emerging trends in research.
