Women who are eligible for publicly-funded health services receive free maternity care from LMCs in the Nelson Marlborough region. Midwives are experts in normal pregnancy and childbirth and can provide all of your maternity care when your pregnancy, childbirth and post-natal period are normal. Our local midwives work in partnership with women and their families in a relationship based on trust, shared decision making and responsibility, negotiation and shared understanding. If your midwife is concerned about the wellbeing of you or your baby at any time, she will refer you to an obstetrician at either Nelson or Wairau hospital for advice or medical care.

An expectant Nelson mother is speaking out against a decision by the district health board to disestablish the jobs of three of its senior midwives.

She received a letter from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board last week, which states that as part of a recent midwifery service review, the case loading midwives team will be disestablished from 30 September, Kim says that although these midwives will continue to be employed by the hospital as part of the core midwifery team, it will be a huge blow to many Nelson mothers, as well for the midwives themselves.

Kim says she is aware from friends that it is already difficult to find a midwife in Nelson at times, with people often not being able to get the first, second, or sometimes even third choices of private midwife. A spokesperson from the NMDHB says they will continue to support all women to have access to lead maternity care from a midwife. Nelson Weekly. Sign in. Forgot your password? Get help.

Certified Nurse Midwives in the Dallas Area

The Midwifery Council does not employ or recommend midwives, we do hold the Register of Midwives. Simply type in the name of your midwife, and the Register will show if they have a current practising certificate and other information such as their qualifications and any conditions on their practice. In New Zealand, registration is for life, so midwives remain in the Register even when they are not practising. This is a good option. Most new mothers are happy to pass on the contact details for their midwife if she was happy with the maternity care she received. Your GP can discuss your options for maternity care and will have contact details of midwives in the area. This phone line is run by the Ministry of Health. If you cannot find a Lead Maternity Care midwife then please ring the community midwifery team of your local hospital. They will provide you with midwifery care and may even be able to put you in contact with an LMC midwife when and if one becomes available. It is important that you receive care throughout your pregnancy.
