Girl meets dirt recipes

We're thinking gin or vodka would work well here. Fruit shrubs are commercially available in stores and online; see below for Sheela's recommendations. You can also make your own shrub using this recipe from The Kitchn. Pour shrub over ice in a highball or Collins glass. Top with club soda and garnish with lemon or lime wedge, if using. Shrub recommendations: There are small, artisanal brands all over the country making their own unique shrubs in a wide array of flavors.

Quince, in fact, is their bestselling flavor. Audra says she is adamant about sourcing fruit only from the San Juans; often they pick it themselves. Orcas orchards also yield the Italian plums she makes into a cutting preserve, as well as a spoon preserve flavored with anise hyssop from her garden.

The business—Girl Meets Dirt—creates handmade, small-batch artisanal preserves that are designed for savory pairings with cheese or charcuterie. Lawlor walked away from a career on Wall Street, trading in the wilds of Manhattan for the pastoral scene of Orcas Island. She and her husband left without a clear plan, but Lawlor knew she wanted to live closer to the earth and do something where she could work with her hands. Lawlor had grown up in the Northwest—in Vancouver, Washington—and had spent time boating in the San Juan Islands with her parents.

There are not many people who are brave enough to walk away from a successful career on Wall Street to move across the country to a small island to take up preserve making, but Audra Lawlor, the founder of Girl Meets Dirt , did just that and lived to tell the tale. She and her husband left the big city to settle on and farm five acres of land off the coast of Washington State on Orcas Island. There they grow, buy, and forage for fruit and herbs that they preserve by hand using traditional French methods, capturing the bountiful tastes of summer for the coming months of cold. Shiro Plum with Mint is one of the preserves Audra made the first summer on the island. Picked from a tree already growing on the farm, the Shiro plums pair magnificently with the spearmint that Audra found growing wild nearby. All she adds is organic cane sugar and organic lemon juice for a bright and intense jam, chunky with pieces of ripe fruit. A versatile preserve that works well with both the sweet and the savory, Audra recommends serving a dollop with toast and cheese for a classic pairing.
