I need to know the main areas of interest in Rajasthan. Any tips? Kindly advise on:. What about safaris? India is the best tourist destination I have ever been to, and Rajasthan is the best part of India, so you are likely to get some very long replies to this question! Really, in the long run, it will all come down to personal preference, and you will probably find a guide book will do most of the deciding for you.

Whatever you choose, it is almost certain to be wonderful. My own personal preference would be -- just roughly in order -- Jaisalmer , Jodhpur , Udaipur , Jaipur , Bundi.

Since you have only ten days, you may have to leave out at least one of those, and, even though I think Bundi is absolutely gorgeous, it is sufficiently remote from the other four to be the one that would logically be left out.

Ideally, however, you should stretch your ten days to twenty and do the lot. We saw these cities in comparatively-temperate November, whereas you are going at a rather difficult time of the year. For that reason, I don't think my advice is really worth your listening to But I would exhort you to see Jaisalmer if you can, and to stay at Shahi Palace while you are there.

It's not only a great place to stay, but they will organise a camel safari for you that will be the highlight of the whole trip. Any hotel in Jaisalmer -- and, I would imagine, any passer-by in Jaisalmer -- can and will organise a camel safari -- that's virtually all they do there -- but the ones from Shahi Palace go to a remote part of the desert where the "regular" camel safaris don't go.

We travelled by train to all of these destinations in Rajasthan except fo Udaipur, which is a little awkward to reach by rail unless they have opened up a standard-gauge railway line by now. For Udaipur we travelled by bus from Bundi. Awkward or not, Udaipur is a great place to visit and I hope you will not need to leave it out.

The rail jouney Agra -Jodhpur-Jaisalmer-Jaipur is really very convenient most of the time you can travel by night and arrive in the early morning , so this will be a good way to maximise your sightseeing. I could go on and on, but, as I said, my experiences in November might be totally different to the conditions you are likely to find in June, so I think in all fairness I should yield to more knowledgeable posters. Thanks a ton Alan! Judging from all the reviews n posts, I think I'll skip the months of June-July as I dont want to dampen mum's spirits.

I hear Puskar Camel fair is not that good Which other festivals are good? Now, since its such a wonderful place Can you give me more advice?? Taj Rambagh Palace. Udaipur :?? Oberoi Udai villas?? Lake Palace. Please tell me, which order should I go and how?? Three weeks is really much better for an area as large and fascinating as this, so I feel that your revised schedule is much better.

As for the time of year, I have heard that from mid-Octoober onwards is the time to go, when the monsoons are finished and the country is green and fresh. Delhi is the place to land if you want to maximise your time in Rajasthan , and the train is generally the way to go trains are frequent and surprisingly comfortable, and, while we heard horror stories of twenty-four hour delays, nearly every train we took in five weeks was on time , as you don't, then, have to put up with the long trips out to the airport and the even longer check-in formalities as a country at war, the security at Indian airports, even for a simple domestic flight , is a bit daunting Our itinerary went something like this: after a couple of days in Delhi, we caught a late-evening train to Agra , spent a night there choose a hotel close to the Taj gates, such as the Hotel Sheela , and got up VERY early the next morning to see the Taj Mahal at sunrise One night and three-quarters of a day in Agra is really all you need.

In the late afternoon we caught an overnight train to Jodhpur , arriving just on daylight. This is a terrific "blue" city, with, among other things, the best omelette and one of the best lassis we found anywhere in India. Definitely worth 2 days and 2 nights, minimum. Stay close to the Old Gate, as, when you come down from your day of climbing the Fort, you will really need a landmark so that you can find your hotel! There is an early-morning train from Jodhpur which will have you in Jaisalmer around lunch time.

Enough time on that first day to check into your hotel and then stroll through the old city, which will seem confusing at first, but is surprisingly easy to "learn"; if you spend a few days there, you will soon feel right at home. Take at least three nights in Jaisalmer -- you will want to spend one night out in the desert and there are some people who do a three or even four day camel safari.

The afternoon train from Jaisalmer goes back through Jodhpur which it passes through in the middle of the night, so this is not the time for a return visit and arrives in the "pink" city of Jaipur just on daylight. This is worth another two nights, minimum. We stayed at Umaid Bhawan there, and couldn't have been happier it was our "big splurge" Booking through their own website will save you a lot of money So far that's used up about twelve nights of your three weeks. You mentioned the Tiger sanctuary and the Pushkhar Fair, neither of which I have been to, but this would probably be the time to factor in one or both these although I, like you, have heard many negative reports on the Pushkhar Fair, which, apparently, has become so commercialised that nowadays it's more like the Pushkhar Theme Park.

The tiger snactuary is, if I recall, in the same neck of the woods as is Bundi, so this might be a good move I haven't been to Bikaner. There is a train to Bundi, which, if memory serves, is an express as far as Kota , at which point you change for a local train this last part is only a half-hour. I can't remember just what the time-table is for that leg -- or even where we came FROM when we arrived in Kota Bundi was Rudyard Kipling's favourite fort in India, and, when you see it, you will know why.

The rest of the town is quite small, and it's just far enough off the beaten track not to be overrun by sightseers. I recall we arrived, once again, in the early morning, and the bus for Udaipur left late at night, so the trip to Bundi will only take two nights -- one on the train and one in a guest house.

The third night you are on the bus, and by morning you are in Udaipur. One of the James Bond movies was set in this picturesque city; we must have stayed at the only hotel in town that wasn't playing this movie on DVD every single night, because I can't remember which of the Bond movies it was!

Udaipur is an easy city to stroll in because of the lake in the centre Two nights there, minimum. While Udaipur is not the easiest place in the world to get to and from by train for instance, I don't think there is a direct service to Mumbai , one can, I think, get an express from there to Delhi once again, check the Indian Railways site.

Everyone told us not to plan too many changes of locale, because the climate in India is so enervating. I admit that when our itinerary was finalised, I began to worry a little that we had tried to cram too much in, and that we'd exhaust ourselves and not enjoy anything. But we found the climate in November was very easy to live with, even in ultra-hot places like Jaisalmer, and the strangeness and the excitement of the country gave us a continual burst of energy which kept us on top of things.

We did, however, drink a particular brand of local bottled mango juice almost continually I guess we spent as much on drinks as we did on accommodation, what with that drink plus the obligatory lassi in every town. But it was a great way to spend our money I'd better stop, as I am getting homesick for India, as I do every time I read or write anything on this forum.
